A joint ECMWF-JCSDA (Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation) workshop on Assimilating Satellite Observations of Clouds and Precipitation into NWP Models will convene from 1 to 3 December 2015 at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park (USA).

It follows similar events in 2005 and 2010 on the same topic.

The 2010 workshop was also jointly organized with the JCSDA, and hosted by ECMWF.  The decision to hold a third workshop was prompted by a recommendation from the International Precipitation Working Group (IPWG).

The purpose of the meeting is to bring together different communities involved with the provision, interpretation and use of observations that can provide information on clouds and precipitation. The workshop will document recent developments and make recommendations to NWP centres and the scientific community as well as reporting to groups such as IPWG.

The workshop will critically review the current state of the art in areas such as modelling clouds and precipitation processes, observation characteristics, radiative transfer, data assimilation and physical inversion techniques. It will also consider issues related to validation and coordination, and the evaluation of new measurement approaches. The main outcomes, actions and recommendations will be published in a report.

More information about the workshop, how to request an invitation and the detailed programme can be found on the JCSDA website.
