Registration is now open for ECMWF’s Workshop on High-Performance Computing in Meteorology, taking place from 24 to 28 October 2016 in Reading, UK.
The increasing complexity of high-performance computer (HPC) architectures presents significant challenges for the ongoing development of operational meteorological applications.
The workshop will look at the issues surrounding the scalability of NWP codes and the steps required to enable the community to use future large-scale heterogeneous HPC systems.
There will be plenty to report: at the time of the last workshop in this series in 2014, ECMWF’s Scalability Programme was still in its early stages. Now, many partnerships and projects such as ESiWACE, ESCAPE, NEXTGenIO and EarthServer2 are well under way.
The aim is to provide a forum where users from our Member States and around the world can report on their experience and achievements in the field of high-performance computing over the last two years.
Plans for the future and requirements for computing power will also be presented.
“A major challenge is to ensure that we can continue to improve forecast models without exceeding the affordable levels of energy consumption,” ECMWF’s Deputy Director of Computing Isabella Weger said.
“HPC technology developments are influencing the directions that NWP will take – and success will come from a combination of new scientific approaches, algorithms and exploiting novel hardware architectures,” she added.
“This is why events such as this that bring together meteorologists, computer scientists and HPC vendors are critically important for the future development of weather forecasting.”

This workshop is open to national weather services of ECMWF’s Member and Co-operating States, to other major meteorological centres, and to users and manufacturers of supercomputers.
