Abstract A basic monitoring system for lidar observations has been put in place. Time series of cloud observations from the CALIPSO lidar and corresponding first-guess departures simulated from the ECMWF model have been generated. Their comparison has shown that using the model, quantities with smaller ranges of oscillation are monitored. The study has also demonstrated that cloud-top height derived from backscatter can be used as a monitoring variable. Results indicate that, by monitoring the time series of first guess departures instrument/model anomalies can be identified when they exceed some typical range of variation. Thus, a set of threshold values are defined, on which a warning system could be based.
